Italy- I came, I Saw, I ate

Flashback Friday to one of my first trips to Italy. Everything was so new and exciting. Discovering the marketplaces, finding another kosher winery there, another artisanal producer of kosher cheeses there.  Atara Harow from the Jerusalem Post joined onc such trip in May 2013 and here are some of her impressions.

Avicam Gitlin discovered the art of cooking at a young age. Fast forward 20 years and he has come up with a practical way of pampering Jewish tourists who lack kosher food when vacationing abroad through his kosher travel company.

“Sitting under the Tuscan sun in the garden of a beautiful villa in Monteroni d’Arbia, a small town in the southern region of Siena, Italy, I am surrounded by hectares of vast meadows with shades of green that Israel’s landscape palette sorely lacks. The big cities and the stress of dayto- day life are miles away, and I am on a dream vacation. Except that it is real.

Across from me sits Avicam Gitlin, a 32-year-old chef from Modi’in, owner of Kosher Culinary Adventures specializing in packaged tours for the independent traveler. This is Gitlin’s sixth organized trip to Tuscany. Born in Israel and raised in Orlando, Florida, Gitlin’s past trips here have transformed him into a native of the land. “Before I choose a location, I like to scout the area first, meet the people and learn about the culture – an imperative ingredient when I cook for my guests,” he says.

Getting Lost in Indonesia

Indonesia is such a magical place that I never thought I would end up in. A chance encounter in Singapore and then next thing I knew I was on a 35 minute ferry to Batam, Indonesia. A business center, close to Singapore, lots of multinational companies, not a tourist place – just a place to do business. From there the adventure began and for now the pictures will do the talking. From mountains, rice fields, Hindu temples, Muslim holy sites, breath-taking beaches, and the sweetest people on earth. Indonesia will enchant you.

My Story

Great ideas are born when good friends and great wine come together.

It all started in
It all started 8 years ago when a group of friends sat together on a Friday night enjoying a delicious Shabbat meal, with lots of talking and laughter. It was springtime and just the right season to travel to Tuscany.

We all shared our desire to travel to Italy, we longed to enjoy the gorgeous rolling Tuscan hills, the scent of the Italian cypress trees under the warm Mediterranean sun, and above all, we dreamt of experiencing the exquisite local cuisine, while keeping it kosher.

Kosher Culinary Travel was born that night.
